Systems and Metadata Librarian -- Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary -- Austin, TX

JOB TITLE: Systems and Metadata Librarian
REPORTS TO: Director of the Library
DIRECT REPORTS: Occasional part-time support staff

SUMMARY: The Systems and Metadata Librarian administers the library management system, hosted offsite authentication platform, and discovery service for Austin Seminary and provides bibliographic access to library holdings for serials, books, electronic resources, and locally created content.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties related to librarianship may be assigned.


  • Administers all activities related to planning, implementation, and support of library technology platforms. Responsibilities include the integrated library system (ILS), discovery service, offsite authentication, and library website
  • Performs original and copy cataloging for print resources, e-resources, and locally created content
  • Provides individual and group reference services to students, faculty, and the general public
  • Troubleshoots system issues
  • Maintains vendor relations
  • Works with other staff collaboratively on library initiatives and service requests
  • Works with Seminary of the Southwest staff for ILS platform customizations and service issues


  • Participates in information literacy training of students and faculty
  • Runs regular reports in Microsoft Access
  • Oversees serial (journal) subscriptions. Responsibilities include management of digital subscriptions, serials check-in, and binding
  • Manages iTunes U collection of seminary video and audio, legacy audio digitization project, and student digitization staff
  • Available to support front desk staff when Public Services Librarian is unavailable
  • On call to assist weekend and evening staff with system problems


Education: Master of Library Science (or equivalent) from a school accredited by the American Library Association.

Special Certifications/Training: None

Experience: Two years of technical services experience; experience in system management desirable.

Special Requirements/Skills:

  • Fluency in using OCLC bibliographic utilities, LCSH, MARC integrated format, AACR2, RDA, descriptive and subject cataloging
  • Advanced knowledge of and ability to effectively utilize computers / software and command line interfaces, including Windows, HTML, XML, CSS, UNIX, javacsript, SQL, and a scripting language
  • Utilizes ExLibris Voyager ILS, EBSCO discovery service, OCLC Connexion, and OCLC EZProxy
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work
  • Ability to analyze and summarize data in a clear and concise manner
  • Understanding of theological education and scholarship
  • Commitment to being a team player
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to learn quickly and independently
  • Maintains a bias toward action
