Job Description
The Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T), a technological research university that is part of the University of Missouri System, seeks a collaborative, innovative, and experienced leader for the position of Dean of the Library. As the chief academic and administrative officer of the Curtis Laws Wilson Library, the Dean reports directly to the Vice Provost of Academic Support and serves as a member of the Provost’s Leadership Cabinet. The Dean of the Library will provide a clear vision of the evolving role of the library and how it directly supports the strategic initiatives and intellectual core of the university. The Dean of the Library oversees approximately 7 non-tenure track faculty librarians, 13 staff members, and 34 students.

The Curtis Laws Wilson Library provides access to nearly 1 million books, e-books, databases, and journals. It is also home to both the University Archive and to Scholars’ Mine – Missouri S&T’s Institutional Repository, which has achieved 2.5 million downloads and is entering a period of increasing support from campus. The library’s learning commons is strategically growing in phases, with new opportunities to embed technology and improve spaces to support student success. The Dean will:

  • Establish a shared vision that promotes the missions of the library and the University by developing, implementing, advocating for, and advancing the library’s strategic plan;
  • Provide visionary and effective leadership to library faculty, staff, and students to collectively achieve the strategic initiatives;
  • Lead the continuing transformation of the Curtis Laws Wilson Library into a student center that encourages research, academic excellence, and collaboration in a technologically rich environment;
  • Foster positive relationships with the university, UM System, and local communities to improve library services and facilities, enhance the quality of resources, and increase operational efficiency;
  • Support intellectual inquiry by aligning library services with advances in research, instructional delivery, curriculum development, and academic study;
  • Provide strategic leadership for the coordination and management of library services including planning, budgeting, assessment, and the integration of emerging technologies and trends.
  • Collaborate effectively with campus and UM System leadership by serving on and working with various divisions, departments, and committees to support research, teaching, service, and learning.
  • Effectively plan and manage the financial resources of the library to meet current needs and allow for the attainment of strategic initiatives;
  • Support the traditional core functions of the library for those patrons who depend on them;
  • Appreciate the diverse needs of research library patrons, such as undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the community, and promote a service-based environment to support these constituencies effectively;
  • Lead the library’s collaboration efforts with other libraries in the University of Missouri System and national and international organizations to optimize the use of existing resources and the development of new initiatives;
  • Engage in fundraising to support strategic library initiatives;
  • Foster a responsive culture of respect, teamwork, professional growth, and responsibility that welcomes and rewards change and innovation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in library science or a master’s degree in a related field, with at least 8 years of relevant library experience;
  • Exceptional oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Second master’s degree;
  • Demonstrated progressive experience in an academic library setting;
  • Demonstrated administrative responsibilities in budget and planning;
  • Proven leadership in program management and interdisciplinary collaboration;
  • Strong collaborative and leadership skills to focus faculty, staff and student efforts to achieve common goals;
  • Commitment to the educational role of academic libraries, and alignment of library activities with curricula, instruction/outreach, and research;
  • Evidence of success in securing external funding and an appreciation of stewardship and collaborative relationships within and beyond the university;
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a complex institution and collaborate with students, faculty and staff at campus level as well as all other stakeholders;
  • Dedication to diversity and social justice and promoting a respectful work environment
