Job Summary
Reporting to the Director of Libraries, this position oversees the SWOSU Libraries' Technical Services Department. The Collection Management and Technical Services Librarian coordinates the acquisition, processing, cataloging, and maintenance of the library's collections, including monographs, curriculum materials, government documents, and serials. These tasks are to be performed in a manner that professionally, cordially, and efficiently assists the students, faculty, staff, and visitors who come in contact with this Office. The Collection Management and Technical Services Librarian shall promote the SWOSU environment of celebrating diversity in all forms.

Essential Functions

  • Working in a team environment, the Technical Services Librarian supervises and coordinates the acquisition, selection, deselection, and cataloging of monographs, including ebooks; acquisition, maintenance, renewal, cancellation, and cataloging of serial subscriptions; acquisition, cataloging, and maintenance of government documents, including electronic content, and acquisition, cataloging, and maintenance of microform holdings
  • Trains and supervises three staff members and student workers in technical services functions, including working with the library management system, bindery, shelving maintenance, and web-based vendor ordering systems
  • Develops policies and procedures for the daily functions of the Technical Services Department
  • Assists the Library Director in preparing the annual library budget as it relates to publisher pricing, subscription trends, and the needs of the Technical Services Department
  • Administers the distribution of the Library’s materials budget for monographs and serials
  • Serves as the SWOSU Libraries’ primary contact with book jobbers, vendors, and publishers, to negotiate purchase price, licensing, and terms of service through document retention of agreements, invoices, and bibliographic records
  • Coordinates the collection review process, including preparing a collection review schedule and supervising the deselection of materials
  • Supervises the cataloging of all materials, including monographs received through firm orders or standing orders; government documents; serials; and gifts. Monitors the shelf ready cataloging service purchased from book vendors
  • Supervises decisions involving the creation, use, and management of machine-readable bibliographic records according to nationally accepted technical standards and accepted local library practices
  • Serves as the SWOSU Libraries’ primary contact with the U.S. Government Information Division at the Oklahoma Department of Libraries and the Oklahoma State University Library Documents Department (regional FDLP contact)
  • Supervises all aspects of Oklahoma’s K-12 curriculum materials, including the processing, maintenance, and management of all materials received annually from publishers as required for the library’s designation as a Congressional District Review Center
  • Works with the Library Director in defining and implementing goals and objectives for the Technical Services Department and providing access to resources for the SWOSU Libraries
  • Compiles statistical and assessment reports as needed by the Director
  • Works with the administrative assistant in the processing of monograph and serial invoices
  • Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted and/or changed at any time at the sole discretion of the University, formally or informally, either orally or in writing

Additional Responsibilities

  • Performs collection development and serves as primary library liaison to selected academic departments
  • Provides reference services through electronic communication platforms
  • Participates in teaching and facilitating the educational objectives of the library instruction program, including training university faculty and students on library resources and services
  • Actively serves on library teams and university committees
  • Promotes personal safety, safety procedures, and a safe work environment
  • Assists in emergency situations as called upon
  • Performs other work-related duties as called upon or assigned

Terms of Employment

  • Eleven-month, tenure track faculty appointment
  • Wage to be established by SWOSU’s wage structure

Required Qualifications

  • MLS or MLIS from an American Library Association accredited library school
  • Minimum of two (2) years of academic library experience in developing and managing library collections
  • Knowledge of cataloging standards, classification, and authority control (e.g., AACR2, RDA, Dewey Decimal System, etc.)
  • Experience using a library management system
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and time-management skills. Ability to read and understand complex documents (e.g., MARC records, licensing agreements, invoices, etc.)
  • Demonstrated teaching or training experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or doctoral degree in another subject area
  • Experience with library acquisitions and/or cataloging workflows, including negotiating with library vendors and other outside agents
  • Familiarity with EBSCO, ProQuest, and other database searching interfaces
  • Familiarity with Midwest Library Service and Ingram Content Group
  • Successful supervisory and project management experience
  • Record of publication or professional contribution demonstrating the potential to meet tenure requirements
