Librarian I - $3150 - $3300

SUMMARY
Performs routine (journey-level) bibliographic and collections maintenance work. This position works in the technical services department of the Talking Book Program, a division of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. The department comprises bibliographic control, cataloging, interlibrary loan, collection development, acquisitions, and automation. Work involves copy cataloging of materials in multiple formats applying Library of Congress and local standards. The resulting MARC records contribute to the integrated library system database and the Talking Book Program’s online catalog. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

ESSENTIAL TASKS

  • Performs copy cataloging of audio, Braille, and large print formats to facilitate access through the integrated library system database and OPAC.
  • Participates in bibliographic cleanup projects to maintain consistency and quality in the catalog.
  • Creates and updates bibliographic records in the WebReads Integrated Library System for items imported or ordered.
  • Assists with collecting cataloging statistics.
  • May assist with processing and preparing library materials including preparation for binding and basic repairs.
  • May perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Attends work regularly and in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.
  • Complies with all applicable agency policies and procedures.

Librarian II - $3350 - $3500

SUMMARY
Performs moderately complex (journey-level) bibliographic and collections maintenance work. This position works in the technical services department of the Talking Book Program, a division of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. The department comprises bibliographic control, cataloging, interlibrary loan, collection development, acquisitions, and automation. Work includes original and copy cataloging of materials in multiple formats applying Library of Congress and local standards. The resulting MARC records contribute to the integrated library system database and the Talking Book Program’s online catalog. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

ESSENTIAL TASKS

  • Performs copy and select original cataloging of audio, Braille, and large print formats to facilitate access through the integrated library system database and OPAC.
  • Identifies and corrects existing bibliographic records to maintain consistency and quality in the catalog.
  • Creates and updates bibliographic records in the WebReads Integrated Library System for items imported or ordered and verifies items received are correct.
  • Collects and maintains cataloging statistics.
  • May process and prepare library materials, including preparation for binding and basic repairs.
  • May train or provide guidance to others.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
  • Attends work regularly and in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.
  • Complies with all applicable agency policies and procedures.

Librarian I - $3150 - $3300

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in library and information science from an American Library Association accredited program.
  • Experience or graduate coursework in acquisitions, cataloging, collection maintenance, interlibrary loan, or other library technical services areas.
  • Experience using word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications.
  • Familiarity with bibliographic tools and standards including Library of Congress standards
  • Familiarity with an integrated library system.
  • Ability to perform visual activities requiring prolonged attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently with moderate supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working in a talking book library environment
  • Experience performing reader’s advisory
  • Experience using bibliographic cataloging databases (LOC, OCLC, Bibliofile, etc.)
  • Experience as a cataloger using Library of Congress standards
  • Experience with a MARC-based library automation system.

College transcripts (undergraduate and graduate) must be submitted at the time of application.

SUPERVISION

  • Has no supervisory responsibility.
  • Reports to Director, Talking Book Program; works under team leadership of the Administrator, Automation and Collections.

Librarian II - $3350 - $3500

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in library and information science from an American Library Association accredited program.
  • One year of experience as a cataloger.
  • Experience using bibliographic cataloging databases (LOC, OCLC, Bibliofile, etc.).
  • Experience using word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications.
  • Familiarity with bibliographic tools and standards including Library of Congress standards.
  • Experience using an integrated library system.
  • Ability to perform visual activities requiring prolonged attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently with moderate supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to work in a team environment

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working in a talking book library environment.
  • Experience performing reader’s advisory.
  • Experience with a MARC-based library automation system.
  • Experience as a cataloger using Library of Congress Subject Headings, Library of Congress genre/form, and Dewey Decimal Classification scheme.
  • Experience cataloging including assigning authorized headings for names and subject terms.
  • Experience gathering library statistics using standard methodology.
  • Experience with the WebReads integrated library system.
  • Experience using authority records.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • College transcripts (undergraduate and graduate) must be submitted at the time of application.
  • Occasional overtime work, including night and weekends may be required
