The University of Missouri Libraries (MU Libraries) invites applications for the full-time, NTT Librarian position of Head of Instructional Services. We are seeking a leader who will collaborate with colleagues in and out of the library to advance information literacy and effective use of the library on our campus. Provision of library support for first-year students at MU with particular emphasis on reaching first-generation and underserved populations will be a priority for this position. The position benefits from close partnership with our eLearning Technologies department in the libraries which supports equipment, software, training, and support for the creation of online content; integration of library resources and services into the Canvas LMS; and library Web administration. The successful candidate will be an experienced instructor who is engaged with library instruction pedagogy; committed to continual program assessment; and dedicated to the professional development of librarians in teaching roles. This position is part of the Research, Access, and Instructional Services (RAIS) Division in Ellis Library and will work collaboratively across all MU Libraries to support assessment and professional development of instructional services.
- Lead library initiatives to integrate information literacy into the curriculum with particular attention to programs supporting first-year and underrepresented student experiences
- With the Instruction Librarian, plan and provide library instruction for Mizzou’s composition program
- Work with colleagues to promote effective scaffolding of information literacy and library use into academic programs
- Serve as the primary liaison to non-curricular academic units such as the Graduate School, the Student Success Center, the Honors Program, FIGs, Writing Program, and the Transfer Center
- Contribute to a culture of teaching by leading and encouraging professional development related to instruction
- Collaborate on developing various instructional and promotional materials and spaces, including classroom spaces, tutorials, related learning objects and web content
- Ensure regular collection of feedback from students and faculty engaged with library instruction opportunities
- Collect library instruction data for planning and assessment, as well as for library and national reporting
- Coordinate delivery and promotion of open library workshops
- Supervise one or more NTT librarians
- Contribute to the provision of Ellis Library general reference and instruction
- Keep up with library instruction advances, techniques, and trends; and bring new ideas back to colleagues in the library
- May serve one or more academic programs as a subject librarian with responsibilities for outreach, research consultation, instruction, and collection development for assigned area(s)
- Participate in library and campus committees
Graduate degree in library and information science (MLS, MLIS, or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program or its equivalent
The successful candidate will also be evaluated on the following:
- Post-MLS experience in an academic library
- Teaching experience in libraries or higher education
- Supervisory experience
- Experience with creation and delivery of online and asynchronous library instruction
- Evidence of engagement with current developments in educational/instructional technologies and design
- Commitment to supporting the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Understanding of information needs and information-seeking habits of undergraduates
- Understanding of how graduate students’ information needs and skills differ from undergraduates
- Evidence of successful program development and assessment
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to contribute positively to a team environment
- Participation in professional opportunities to improve teaching skills and maintain currency in library instruction pedagogy
Salary and librarian rank will be commensurate with experience. Negotiable from $56,500.
This position holds non-tenure track faculty status (NTT) and will be hired at the appropriate rank of Librarian or Archivist.
