Job Summary
The Network Administrator performs complex (journey-level) network work for the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. The Network Administrator’s primary responsibility is to administer and support the state library’s Local and Wide Area Network, internal infrastructure, and all telecommunications. This administrator ensures the reliable operation of the agency’s internal network and telecommunications to the consolidated state data center, the Internet, and the library’s business partners by analyzing and monitoring network performance, researching and planning for hardware and software upgrades. The Network Administrator works under general supervision of the ITS Operations Manager and with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Essential Tasks
- Administer Cisco network devices including firewall/VPN, routers, and switches as well as internal infrastructure, wireless access, and all telecommunications.
- Research and analyze current and emerging technologies, hardware, software, and services and develop recommendations for ITS management on system upgrades and configurations.
- Utilize project management strategies to complete tasks for technical projects related to designated area of responsibility.
- Work with the technical staff at the consolidated state data center, DIR network support, as well as with vendors, users, management, and ITS staff to resolve technical issues.
- Attend work regularly in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.
- Comply with all applicable agency policies and procedures including safety and standards of conduct.
- Performs other duties, as assigned.
Other Tasks
May assist other ITS staff in performing tasks during vacancies and/or emergency situations.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalency
- Four-years experience managing a Cisco local and wide area network.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Information Technology or related degree.
- Experience utilizing network management and monitoring applications.
- Experience administering Meraki wireless equipment.
- Certification as a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP), Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE), Cisco Certified Design Expert (CCDE) or Cisco Certified Architect (CCAR)
- Experience working as a Network Administrator for a state agency or other governmental entity.
- Project management experience.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of technology across all mainstream networks, operating systems, and application platforms.
- Skill in the use of applicable software and the configuring, deploying, monitoring, and automating of network applications and infrastructure.
- Ability to resolve complex networking issues in diverse and decentralized environments.
- Ability to plan, develop, monitor, and maintain networking processes and controls.
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing and in person.
- Ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.
- Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
- Ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. Ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions (includes finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events).
Environmental/Physical Conditions
Normal office work environment. May have exposure to dust and environmental allergens consistent with normal business activities and human contact. Mostly sedentary in nature but may involve moving; standing; remaining stationary for long periods of time; pulling and pushing; kneeling, stooping, and bending; and safely moving items weighing up to 30 pounds. Work involves extensive repetitive motions while operating the computer. Normal cognitive abilities including the ability to learn, recall, and apply certain practices and policies. Some travel, including overnight travel, by personal automobile required. Must be available to work a normal day schedule Monday through Friday with some after hour and occasional weekend assignments.
