Job Description
The University seeks a dynamic, energetic leader who has demonstrated outstanding scholarship, transformative leadership and an overall commitment to educational excellence. The Director leads the John B. Coleman Library in its mission to meet the needs of the University and the larger community. The Director reports to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. As the Chief Administrative Officer for the Library, the Director is responsible for providing leadership and oversight as well as management of fiscal resources. The Director is responsible for planning, budgeting, and staffing in support of the academic, instructional and information needs of faculty, students and staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop programs and policies in support of the academic program overall and in key areas such as information literacy, student and faculty research, and technology as well as assess quality and effectiveness of the programs; Develop and administer the Library’s annual operating budget; Manage the Library’s physical collections.
  • Consult with College faculty to determine library resources and service needs of academic programs and departments; Consult with College administrators to determine budget and personnel requirements and to coordinate library practices and procedures with College policies; Consult with the Executive Director of Academic Technology to determine technology needs and resources and to provide support for information management and delivery; Consult with Physical Plant Department to coordinate maintenance of and modifications to the Library building.
  • Direct Library operations, and manage and supervise library professional and support staff.
  • Represent the College at national and regional conferences; Participate in leadership positions in appropriate professional associations; Acts as an advocate for the libraries and its faculty and staff; Fosters professionalism and a positive work/learning environment for all in the University Libraries.
  • Enforces policies and regulations adopted by the State of Texas, Texas A&M University System, and Prairie View A&M University.
  • Facilitates the continuing transformation of the University Libraries into a knowledge commons that integrates resources, seeks new opportunities, engages with the community, collaborates with university units, and sustains a vibrant research and learning community.
  • Creates an environment that facilitates research and scholarly activity with an understanding of innovative and traditional methods of innovation and dissemination.
  • perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Library Science or Information Science.
  • Ten years of related experience in a library environment, including managerial experience.

Preferred Education:
Doctorate in Library Science or Information Science.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. Knowledge of electronic resources, library technologies, and automated library systems. Knowledge of strategic planning and assessment of library programs, operations, and services.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
