St. Louis County Library is a 20 branch system, serving over 860,000 patrons and circulating over 11 million items a year.  SLCL recently completed a multi-year capital improvement project called Your Library Renewed, which upgraded existing structures and opened new facilities, allowing for enhanced library programs and services. Not only do we have state-of-the-art buildings and bookmobiles, but our array of programs and partnerships are abundant and diverse. As a vital member of the Bookmobile and Mobile Services Department, you'll be a driving force in connecting our community with the transformative power of the library. For 78 years, our bookmobiles have woven a rich history of accessibility across the County, bringing library services and resources to people of all ages. As the Assistant Manager, you'll collaborate closely with the Manager to spearhead outreach initiatives, extending the library's reach through our dynamic mobile platforms. These include:

  • School Bookmobiles: Serving over 50 elementary schools within the District, fostering a love of reading in young minds.
  • Senior Vans: Delivering comfort and connection to residents in memory care facilities, senior homes, skilled nursing homes, independent living centers, community care centers, adult daycares, and assisted living centers.
  • Preschool Outreach Vans: Nurturing early literacy by providing carefully selected collections to preschools, early childhood centers, and daycares.
  • Sweet Reads Unit: Bridging access gaps by bringing books and library materials directly to neighborhoods in need, operating on a unique honor system with primarily donated resources.
  • Homebound Service: Ensuring that individuals unable to visit the library due to illness, disability, or age can still enjoy the enriching experience of reading.

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Assists in supervising and monitoring staff to ensure smooth operation of the department.
  2. Assist in managing the operations for all Department fleet vehicles.
  3. Supervises and participates in public service activities in a mobile service setting throughout the St. Louis County Library District.
  4. Assist with the planning, promotion and strategic growth of the Bookmobiles and Mobile Services Department.
  5. Provides direct and indirect assistance to customers to ensure quality service.
  6. Assists in the development and maintenance of the Department’s circulating collection to ensure the items meet the needs of the community it serves.
  7. Other duties may be assigned.

Hours:

Monday – Friday: 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Evenings and weekends as needed

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Demonstrated experience in management, training, and motivating staff
  • Preferred experience in community outreach, mobile library services and/or public libraries
  • Must possess a commitment to a high level of public service to Library customers through mobile service
  • Must possess good judgment, analytical, and problem solving skills
  • Must possess excellent communication and organization skills
  • Ability to work effectively with other Library managers in a professional manner
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a good driving record 

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Ability to operate various library vehicles, from vans to bookmobile freightliners up to 40 feet
  • Ability to stand up and/or sit down for up to 8 hours per shift
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs
  • Ability to bend to low shelves or reach to high shelves when reaching for books and other library material
  • Ability to push a full cart or flatbed full of books, totes or other Library materials
  • Ability to think creatively to solve problems and improve service
  • Ability to deal sensitively and tactfully with customers and staff
  • Ability to operate various types of Library equipment
  • Ability to use electronic hardware and software
  • Ability to use a pc, word processing and e-mail

Performance Criteria for the Essential Responsibilities

  1. Assists in supervising and monitoring staff to ensure smooth operation of the department.
    • Participates in hiring, training, evaluating, coaching, and disciplining staff to ensure the Library staff is capable of giving the highest quality service.
    • Responsible for monthly, weekly, and daily schedule adjustments and communicating these adjustments to staff while ensuring workload is well-distributed and that the department services are adequately staffed.
    • Reviews and accurately reports time and attendance each pay period so that the information is submitted electronically by the deadline.
    • Provides support, guidance, and training to staff in their work, so that policies and procedures are communicated effectively and staff is advised in handling difficult transactions.
    • Communicates effectively with staff and manager so that manager is kept informed and the staff knows what is expected, and they are aware of system information.
  2. Assist in managing the operations for the all Department fleet vehicles.
    • Assures that drivers are adhering to traffic rules and procedure for the safety of library staff and the safe delivery of library materials through training and daily monitoring
    • Submits appropriate repair requests and follows-up so that the repairs are reported in a timely manner.
    • Work closely with Facilities personnel and vendors to monitor the condition of all Department vehicles to ensure a safe environment for staff and customers.
    • Monitor the condition of electronic equipment and submit repair requests promptly in order to ensure that routine transactions proceed efficiently and customers' requests for information are met.
  3. Supervises and participates in public service activities in a mobile service setting throughout the St. Louis County Library District.
    • Monitors and participates in the provision of public services and maintains familiarity with department procedures in order to help cover during absences and busy periods and ensuring that customers’ information needs are answered in an accurate, timely, and appropriate manner.
    • Drives all Department vehicles on a regular basis to maintain skill set and provide service at all scheduled service stops.
    • Supports and guides staff to ensure that difficult transactions proceed efficiently and customers’ requests for information are satisfactorily addressed while enforcing the Library’s Code of Conduct.
    • Monitors and disseminates department and system-wide policies and procedures and coordinates effectively with Manager and staff to ensure they are kept updated.
  4. Assist with the planning, promotion and strategic growth of the Bookmobiles and Mobile Services Department.
    • Assist with developing department strategies to assess and serve the needs of the community.
    • Identify and foster relationships with organizations and groups in the community  to establish working relationships that make department and library resources available to the public.
    • Actively support the Department and the Public Services Department fostering positive relationships with all library staff and participate in events and activities.
    • Monitors and/or compiles statistics to obtain an accurate representation of department activities.
    • Participate in library meetings, seek opportunities to learn new things, keep skills and library resource knowledge up-to-date, and follow current trends in services for all ages.
  5. Provides direct and indirect assistance to customers to ensure quality service.
    • Interact and provide assistance to customers in identifying, locating, and accessing information on a variety of topics.
    • Creates and maintains all service visit schedules in accordance with community needs working closely with staff and organizations.
    • Works cooperatively with public service and support departments as needed to facilitate timely progress on projects and programs.
    • Track, monitor, and provide solutions to service issues in a timely manner.
    • Manage Department resources and equipment so that staff has the proper tools to meet customer needs.
  6. Assists in the development and maintenance of the Department’s circulating collection to ensure the items meet the needs of the community it serves.
    • Assist with all facets of collection development as it pertains to the Department including how materials are shelved and displayed.
    • Monitors holds and works with other departments and branches to ensure that holds are filled.
    • Participates in rebalancing activities to ensure the collection is appropriate in size and scope of the many Department services.
    • Monitors staff’s involvement with the collection as it relates to the services they provide to the community.
    • Manages and resolves high density shelving mechanical issues.
