Job Summary/Description

This professional librarian position participates in the intellectual life and administrative activities of Angelo State University’s library. This librarian coordinates efforts to develop, manage, maintain, and assess its print and electronic collections ensuring they are of appropriate size and align with the academic and research needs of the university. Assists with research services, instruction, and other activities of the work unit and profession.

Typical Duties/Job Duties

  1. Works within the Research & Collections Unit to develop, manage, maintain, and assess the library’s print and electronic collections, ensuring they represent the appropriate scope and breadth to align with the academic and research needs of the university while identifying collection gaps and strengths. Decisions are formed by studying the University’s curriculum, working with Library Administrative Services to analyze data (including COUNTER reports and expenditures), monitoring physical condition of resources, reviewing survey results, and scouring resource reviews from experts.
  2. Leads the Collection Development Committee and fosters collaborative relationships with library liaisons and the library administrative team as well as faculty across campus in gathering information and making decisions regarding the collection, including to evaluate inquiries about gifts-in-kind or donations to library collections. Assists in compiling collection content for surveys and accreditation reports. Develops and implements training for library staff related to collection management.
  3. Provides research assistance and occasional instruction to ASU students and faculty through course embedding or Blackboard discussion forums, and consultations via telephone, email, or in-person meetings. Scheduled research assistance hours include evening and weekend rotations. Utilizes digital and print resources to answer research questions.
  4. Works with the Assistant Director of Academic Engagement and the library’s Marketing Committee to market and promote library resources.
  5. Performs other work typical of a professional librarian in an academic setting, such as maintaining library research guides as assigned while working with faculty and library colleagues to determine content adjustments or new topics. Such work also includes engaging in the profession through service, staying current on related technologies (including AI) plus other trends and issues facing academic libraries and higher education.
  6. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Advanced understanding of library collection management principles, models, and practices, as well as knowledge of reputable publishers, jobbers and general information needs in a collegiate environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of library principles, practices, and techniques – including common databases and service delivery.
  • Ability to lead teams, build consensus, and facilitate discussions in meetings and other environments
  • Demonstrated skills in using current technologies, including online searching, and Microsoft products.
  • Ability to express ideas professionally and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated organization and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to work independently with or without direct supervision as well as in a team environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Library Science or its equivalent.
  • At least three years of experience working in academic library collection development/management.
