Dewey Decimal Classification: The Basics
Does this book on houseplants go in gardening (635.9), botany (581.6), or interior decorating (747)? This is not a drill! For many librarians responsible for cataloging and classifying, this is a common scenario and dilemma when processing new materials. Whether you’re new to this task or needing a refresher, a solid knowledge of the basics of Dewey Decimal Classification will help you feel more comfortable using this important tool.
This class will cover assigning classification numbers with correct meanings in the Dewey hierarchy, as well as assigning numbers when a topic might fall under more than one discipline. Other topics covered include choosing the right number based on Notes and Manual entries, building numbers using the tables, and a look at OCLC's WebDewey.

- Build DDC numbers for a variety of resources
