Foundations of Intellectual Freedom
Learning Objectives:
- Develop a broad understanding of intellectual freedom as a professional value and be able to recall ALA guidelines, policies and best practices in intellectual freedom.
- Identify areas in library policy, procedure and application of service where barriers to access should be removed, privacy should be protected and more inclusive considerations could increase inclusiveness.
- Apply the 5 steps to having purposeful conversations about intellectual freedom issues when responding to users and coworkers.

Homework Expectations and Completion Requirements: The course will be a combination of lectures, reading, written assignments, exercises, and presentations. Students will be expected to complete at least one assignment or project related to each objective and participate in in-class discussions and exercises.
- This course requires individual participation and homework assignments.
- It is designed for individual participation; each individual must register.
- Attendees will watch prerecorded lectures before each live facilitated discussion session. Attendees will also be given opportunities to reflect on what they have learned after each session through discussion board posts.
