Know & Go: Deciphering Music Preferred Titles

Catalogers, increasingly given the task of cataloging music audio recordings and scores, are brought into contact with music preferred titles (AACR2 uniform titles). This Know & Go will help catalogers to better understand these access points and the RDA instructions for formulating them. Among the topics to be covered: the purpose of preferred titles; distinctive and non-distinctive music titles; when and how to add medium of performance; numeric designation of a musical work and key to preferred titles.
 

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the purpose of preferred titles in music
  • Distinguish between distinctive titles and titles consisting solely of the name of one type of composition
  • Discern when to add medium of performance, numeric designation of musical work and key to a preferred title
  • Understand instructions on how to add these elements to a preferred title
  • Understand how to search names of musical works in OCLC.

Target Audience:
Catalogers new to cataloging music audio recordings and scores.

Prerequisites:
Experience applying RDA instructions for creating access points for nonmusical works and expressions.
