Amigos Members Turning to Award-Winning Products from ABC-CLIO Solutions
In increasing numbers, Amigos members are embracing an award-winning lineup of products from vendor partner ABC-CLIO Solutions as their popularity and use grow among students and faculty. Nearly two dozen Amigos members currently use ABC-CLIO Solutions products. One such member is Northwest Vista College Library in San Antonio, TX. Norma Vélez-Vendrell, Public Services Librarian at the library's Redbud Learning Center, noted their staff likes ABC-CLIO databases, especially the ERAS feature she says "is a great way to organize history so that students see a picture of what happened through the centuries."
Vélez-Vendrell also praised The American Mosaic: the Latino American Experience. "It is especially helpful for classes where students have to prepare papers or presentations on popular topics related to Latinos in the US," she said. "I like the statistical information available, and the idea exchange section is sometimes used by our professors as discussion topics for classes."
American Mosaic recently garnered a 2014 Best Educational Software Award – known as a BESSIE – for Best Latin-American Studies Website. ABC-CLIO's Modern Genocide: Understanding Causes and Consequences was awarded a 2014 BESSIE for Best Social Studies Website.
BESSIEs are awarded annually by The ComputED Gazette, Carlsbad, CA. The awards target innovative and content-rich programs and websites that provide parents and teachers with the technology to foster educational excellence. Winners are selected from titles submitted by publishers worldwide. The BESSIE is the second prestigious education software award Modern Genocide has received in the past year, and the 2014 BESSIEs are 21st and 22nd awarded to ABC-CLIO Solutions.
ABC-CLIO President Becky Snyder said of the awards, "We are truly honored to be recognized by the BESSIE awards for excellence in education software, giving weight to our commitment to providing relevant and vetted materials that keep students engaged, and help them to build research, writing, and critical thinking skills. In this age of Google and Wikipedia, ABC-CLIO understands the importance of ensuring educators and librarians have quality and authoritative content to draw upon when teaching and encouraging student inquiry."
