We are currently using deacidification spray on our newspaper clippings and then encapsulating them. Is this the best way to preserve newspapers?

Carmen Cowick, Collections Care Specialist for Amigos, sent this informative response: Using a deacidification spray on newspapers will neutralize harmful acids while providing a lasting protective buffer against future acid problems. After the newspaper is deacidified, it can be encapsulated in a polyester film. This will provide support for a fragile item and permit safer handing. It is preferable to avoid encapsulating newspapers which have not been deacidified. The steps you are currently taking with your collection’s newspapers are in line with preservation best practices and should be continued.
