Head of Access and Public Services -- Truman State University -- Kirksville, MO

Truman State University is seeking a collaborative, innovative, and service-oriented individual for the position of Head of Access and Public Services at Pickler Memorial Library. This position provides leadership, management, and strategic direction for Access and Public Services units consisting of the library service desk, circulation, reserves, resource sharing, and stack maintenance. Responsible for the library circulation system and coordination of outreach, promotion, and engagement activities in collaboration with the research and instruction librarians.

This is a full-time, benefits eligible position with some evening, weekend, and holiday shifts as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversight of the library circulation system and participation in the development of systems that enhance patrons’ access to library resources.
  • Supervises, trains, and participates in hiring and evaluation of staff and student workers; provides training and documentation support for the integrated library system and related public services.
  • Responsible for patrons’ access to library materials, services, and facilities and ensures quality of access by: coordinating public service coverage; monitoring use of collections and study areas; formulating and enforcing policies that enhance patrons’ use of the library; reporting and tracking issues that impact user experience and patron safety as well as the security of the building and collections.
  • Coordinates outreach, promotion, and engagement activities in collaboration with the research and instruction librarians, and participates in the library’s reference assistance, instruction, and collection development programs.
  • Shares responsibility for the physical facility with the Library Dean’s Office and Physical Plant and communicates with these and other campus offices; reviews emergency procedures on a regular basis and communicates changes to staff.
  • Reports to the Dean of Libraries and Museums and serves as a member of the library’s leadership team, contributing to overall library administration, policy development, and strategic planning.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master of Library Science and/or Information Science from an ALA accredited program.
  • Experience with or knowledge of integrated library systems and access services functions.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Strong service orientation and the ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical, organizational and project management skills.
  • Experience with library instruction and outreach.
  • Strong technology skills and the ability to adapt to changing technological environments.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two or more years of supervisory experience in an academic library setting
  • Familiarity with emerging technologies trends in higher education
